Sticking to your health goals at a big event like the Carolina Country Music Fest can be challenging, but it’s doable without sacrificing fun or flavor.
“We like to think that everything is fine in moderation,” says Jamie Kandora, clinical nutrition manager at Tidelands Health. “CCMF is a fun event, so it’s okay to give yourself grace and enjoy it.”
Before you go
Before heading to the festival grounds, Kandora recommends eating a balanced, nutrient-rich meal that includes:
- Lean proteins like turkey, chicken or fish
- Colorful vegetables for fiber and nutrients
- Healthy fats such as those in avocado, olives or olive oil
If you plan to arrive when gates open, opt for a lunch option like this harissa chicken potato bowl, packed with plant- and animal-based proteins, carb-rich vegetables such as potatoes and chickpeas and healthy fats, including olive oil.
As the official health care provider of CCMF, Tidelands Health will have medical staff on-site to assist with health concerns.
A frequent issue treated at the festival is low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, which can be caused by skipping meals or drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. Hypoglycemia can happen to anyone.
Symptoms can include:
- Shakiness or trembling
- Dizziness or confusion
- Intense hunger
- Sweating
- Rapid heartbeat
To avoid this, Kandora suggests eating regularly throughout the day. Look for meals and snacks that combine complex carbs like rice, pasta or whole grain bread with lean proteins.
Good on-site options at CCMF may include:
- Hibachi bowls
- Chicken quesadillas
- Pulled pork sandwiches
While you’re enjoying all the good food and fun, don’t forget to drink enough water to keep you hydrated. Dehydration is the leading cause of visits to the medical tent at CCMF each year.
“You’ll lose a lot of water through sweat,” Kandora says. “Aim to drink about eight ounces of water every 20 minutes, especially if you’re consuming alcohol or energy drinks, which can dehydrate you faster.”
If you end up indulging in a funnel cake or a hot dog, don’t stress. One day of festival food won’t derail your health goals.
“As long as you’re eating a healthy diet and staying active most days, a little indulgence at CCMF likely won’t have a lasting impact,” Kandora says.
